The radiology teams at our Mount Sinai Doctors locations offer experience and expertise for X-rays, MRIs, CT scans and other types of imaging. Our radiologists use a wide range of advanced technology to provide clear, detailed images. As part of your medical team, we use these images in several ways: to diagnose disease and injury, and to guide medical tools such as a catheter during treatments. Each of our radiologists is committed to advanced training and quality care. Members of our team are board-certified, with advanced training in many areas.

Mount Sinai Doctors - Oceanside, Radiology (formerly Radiological Associates of Long Island [RALI], PC) specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of disease and injury using specialized medical imaging such as x-rays, computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), positron emission tomography (PET), fusion imaging, ultrasound, Digital Breast Imaging, and bone density.

CT Scans
A computerized tomography, or CT scan, combines a series of X-ray images taken from different angles and then uses computer processing to create cross-sectional images (referred to as slices) of your body’s blood vessels, soft tissues and bones. CT scan images provide more detailed information than plain X-rays do.

A CT scan has many uses, but it is particularly well-suited to quickly examine or diagnose patients who may have internal injuries or internal bleeding, such as from car accidents or other trauma. It may be used to visualize nearly all parts of the body and can be used to diagnose disease or injury as well as to plan medical, surgical or radiologic treatments.

Your doctor may recommend a CT scan to diagnose muscle and bone disorders, such as fractures or lesions (tumors); pinpoint clotting or infection; detect diseases and conditions such as cancer, heart disease, lung nodules, liver masses and other conditions; monitor the effectiveness of treatments you may be receiving, such as for cancer. Our CT scanners offer low-dose, high-resolution imaging, ensuring safety as well as excellent diagnostics.

Preparing for a CT Scan
CT scan times vary from 15 to 30 minutes. If your CT is being performed with contrast, you may not have anything to eat, drink or chew for three hours before your exam. If you are having a CT scan with contrast, you will receive an injection before being scanned. Please let us know if you are diabetic or allergic to shellfish or iodine, as this may affect your exam. If you are having a CT scan of your abdomen and/or pelvis, you must pick up a drink in our office at least one day before your exam. If you are having a CT scan without contrast, there is NO preparation for the exam.

All images and reports are immediately available to your Mount Sinai South Nassau clinicians from their offices 24 hours a day, via secure connection.

PET CT Services

PET Scans
A positron emission tomography, or PET, scan is an image that helps physicians diagnose how your tissues and organs are functioning. A PET scan uses a radioactive injection, called a tracer, to show this activity.

The tracer material collects in areas of your body that have higher levels of chemical activity, which often correspond to areas of disease. On the PET scan, these areas show up as bright spots.

A PET scan helps physicians or surgeons diagnose or evaluate several conditions, including specific cancers, heart disease and brain disorders. The procedure is safe and noninvasive. You should have no discomfort other than the small injection involved, and there are no side effects from the injection or the scan.

Typically, the entire process takes approximately one to two hours from the time you arrive for your appointment.

Once you have been injected with the tracer, you will rest for 45 minutes. Then you will be asked to lie on a table that passes slowly through a large doughnut-shaped PET camera, which captures pictures of the entire body.

Preparing for Your PET or PET/CT Scan

Do not exercise for 48 hours prior to your appointment.
Do not eat, drink or chew anything other than plain water for six hours before your appointment.
If you are diabetic, your blood sugar level must be 200 or under to have the exam performed, and you cannot take diabetic medications for five hours before the exam. Please bring your medication with you to the exam. Please call us at (516) 255-9555 for instructions if your blood sugar is above 100.
If you have any previous CT, MRI, PET or bone scan images, please bring them with you to your appointment.
Late arrival could postpone your appointment, as the radioactive sugar solution used in the PET is created and shipped specifically for your appointment date and time, and has a very short shelf life.
